Wexford Carol – Dizzy Spell (mit Gratisdownload)

Zum 3. Advent gibt es eine freundliche Gabe von der Gruppe Dizzy Spell: ein sehr altes irisches Weihnachtslied in neuem Gewand aus ihrem Weihnachts-Album. Dazu schreibt Jan Oelmann:
‘Für unser Programm „An Nollaig – irische Weihnacht“ haben wir uns schon vor einiger Zeit auf die Suche nach Christmas Carols von der Grünen Insel gemacht. Ziemlich bald stießen wir im Internet auf eine Kirchenchoraufnahme der sogenannten Wexford Carol. Ein irischer Volkskundler namens Grattan Ford zeichnete das Lied im ausgehenden 19. Jahrhundert in Enniscorthy, County Wexford auf. Deshalb heißt das Stück auch manchmal „Enniscorthy Carol“. Es wird vermutet, dass Melodie und Text auf das 12. Jahrhundert zurückgehen. Wie viele Weihnachtslieder erzählt auch die Wexford Carol die Weihnachtsgeschichte im Schnelldurchlauf.
 Die schöne, eingängige Melodie mit der interessanten Abweichung ins Moll hat uns sofort gefallen, und so haben wir das Lied auch auf unserer Weihnachts-EP veröffentlicht. Damit waren wir – ohne es zu ahnen – in ziemlich prominenter Gesellschaft: Aufnahmen des bekannten Traditionals gibt es unter anderem von Loreena McKennitt (auf ihrer Platte „To drive the cold winter away“), von Moya Brennan, The Chieftains, Eileen Ivers, den Celtic Women und sogar von der US-Bluegrass-Größe Alison Krauss.
 Manchmal ist Unwissenheit auch ein Segen: Von den prominenten Versionen kannten wir zunächst nur die von Loreena McKennitt. Und so konnten wir  – ohne völlig in Ehrfurcht zu erstarren – unsere ganz eigene Fassung für das Lied finden. Viel Spaß damit!’

    Near Bethlehem did shepherds keep
