Bleeding Hearts ~ Folk’n'Glory (2011)

Eine besondere Stellung im Punk-Folk-Rock in Europa nehmen Bleeding Hearts aus Birmingham ein. Ihre Mischung als Folk- und Rockelementen ist unverkennbar und erinnert zeitweise an englische Punkrock Bands der ersten Stunden. Die Hochphase dieser früheren Bands ist bekanntlich schon länger vorbei, Bleeding Hearts lassen den Charme alter Tage gekonnt in moderne Interpretationen von heute einfließen.

Kürzlich erschien mit “Folk’n'Glory” ein weiterer Longplayer dieser fünf Briten. Mit leicht veränderter Bandbesetzung, hat man ein Album in der Tradition vergangener Aufnahmen geschaffen. Wie man den beiliegenden Informationen der CD entnehmen kann, verzichtete man diesmal auf ein professionelles Studio, vielmehr nahm man die Songs live in einem (Probe)Raum auf. Dieses merkt man den Songs aber so gut wie nicht an. Trotz dieser vermeintlichen Low-Budget Produktion ist das klangliche Ergebnis vollkommen ausreichend und gibt den Songs seinen ganz eigenen Charme.

Bleeding Hearts tun in ihren Liedern vieles um sie interessant zu gestalten. Das beginnt mit unterschiedlichen Musiziergeschwindigkeiten und gekonnten Taktwechseln und endet in unterstützendem Frauengesang. Die virtuos gespielte E-Geige gibt dem Ganzen seinen gekonnten Rest. Das diese Band keinen Hehl um ihre politischen Botschaften macht, dürfte jedem Fan klar sein. Songs wie Fakebook oder Modern World setzen sich kritisch mit der heutigen Gesellschaft auseinander. Ein kleiner Anti-Atomkraft Button auf der Rückseite des Covers unterstreicht diese politischen Einstellungen. Folk’n'Glory zeigt einmal mehr, dass Bleeding Hearts eine Band ist, die sich musikalisch auf einem sehr hohen Niveau bewegt. Trotz unzähliger Konzerte und Tourneen haben sie in der breiten Öffentlichkeit – gerade hier in Deutschland – nicht den Stand, der ihnen eigentlich gebührt. Allen Kritikern und Personen, die diese Band nicht kennen, sei diese Scheibe ans Herz gelegt.

Mit Folk’n'Glory haben Bleeding Hearts ein Album geschaffen, welches modern und aktuell ist, welches sowohl mit rotzigen Protestsongs als auch mit melodischen Folk Rock Songs aufwarten kann. Beim ersten Hören fallen einem viele Details nicht auf, vielmehr will diese Platte erobert werden. Jedoch spätestens beim dritten Anhören merkt man, welche Vielschichtigkeit dieses Album besitzt. Folk’n'Glory ist ein perfektes Album in der Schnittmenge aus melodischem Folk Rock und der rauen Rhythmik des Punk Rocks, daher kann man an dieser Stelle nur eine absolute Kaufempfehlung aussprechen.

Bleeding Hearts from Birmingham take up a special place in the European punk-folk-rock scene. Their mix of folk- and rock elements is unmistakable and at times reminiscent to British punk rock bands of the first few hours. Bleeding Hearts incorporated the charm of the old days into modern interpretations of today.

With Folk’n'Glory another longplayer of the five Britons recently appeared. With a slightly different band line, they have created an album in the tradition of past recordings. As you can see from the enclosed promo- and cd information, they recorded this album not in a professional studio, in contrary they recorded the songs “live” in a (trial-)room. Surprisingly, this fact is hardly noticeable. Despite this apparent low-budget production, the sonic result is perfectly adequate and gives each song its own unique charm.

The Bleeding Hearts do much in their songs to make them interesting. This starts with different “playing music speeds” and skilful beat-changes and ends in nice supportive female vocals. The virtuos played electric violin is a perfect complement for the whole rest. That this band makes no secret of their political messages should be clear to every fan. Songs like Fakebook or Modern World are engaging critically with contemporary society. A small anti-nuclear power symbol on the backside of the cover underscores these political attitudes. Folk’n'Glory shows once again, that Bleeding Hearts is a band, whose music moves on a very high level. Despite countless concerts and tours around Europe among the general public – especially here in Germany – they have not the status which actually belongs to them. All the critics and people who never heard the name of this band, I can only recommend this fine piece of music.

With Folk’n'Glory the Bleeding Hearts have created an album that is modern and up to date, it offers both snotty protest songs and melodic folk rock songs. At first hearing, you didn’t hear a lot of details, contrary this record will be conquered. But after the third listening, you realize the complexity of this album. Therefore I can say at this point, the album is great, it’s an absolute buy recommendation.
